Having done some research and what cemetery Horace is buried in I have come to believe that he died between the end of the Battle of Messines Ridge and the 3rd battle for Ypres (now Ieper).
The Cemetery is located near to the front and is a popular burial site for soldiers killed during the 3 battles for Ypres (Ieper). I think these battles took place in 1915, 1916 & 1917.
Obviously the battle that he would have taken part in was the 3rd (and i think final) battle for Ypres (Ieper).
This battle is not well known for being called the 3rd battle of Ypres, which was its official title but is universally known as being called Passchendaele. This took place between July and November 1917.

The battle for Messines Ridge took Place during May and June 1917.
This was the preparation and predecessor to Passchendaele, it was in a strategic position south-East of Ypres. Lots of guns were involved and it is very possible that Horace took part in this and was in preparation for the battle of Ypres when he was killed.
